The Smooth Jazz Network was founded in 1990 by host, consultant and what Billboard refers to as an “evangelist for the format” Allen Kepler to share the music beyond cities like San Diego, Chicago, San Francisco and New York City.
Over the years, Kepler has worked with over 100 radio stations around the world. Various factors such as ownership rules, advertising agendas and the way adults hear music has changed the business and many local radio stations switched due to large corporate ownership and a ratings system that under-reported what upscale adults listen to. In response, Kepler decided to begin streaming the Smooth Jazz Network 24 hours a day via the iHeart Radio application.
